About Us
Harare International School is located in the capital of Zimbabwe, in southern Africa. We are a school of approximately 400 students from over 60 nationalities, something that makes our community so special. We focus a lot of making a positive difference in our school and wider community, and this event is just one of the many ways that we do this.
The 24 hour run is a community event where together we can make a difference. For 24 hours, the whole community gets together to keep a sash moving for an entire day - kind of like a relay race. The sash is the symbol of the run, it is a little like the Olympic flame that is keeping us going. The run gets people to think of others for 24 hours - if they can do it for one day, why not longer? The 24 Hour Run builds community spirit whilst promoting a healthy lifestyle.
What a difference a day makes!
The day begins with the whole community assembled on the field, creating an ambience of community bonding regardless of age, grade or gender. Our youngest and eldest student lead us on our first lap, with the rest of the students and teachers following close behind. After a few initial laps, most students head back to class, returning again at their allotted time. Come 3pm though, the field is a hive of activity, with yoga; pilates; soccer; bike riding and dog walking, to name a few things, occurring. We settle in for the evening with dinner and a movie, and our dedicated team of parents, teachers, seniors and Mr Tobin keeping the sash moving throughout the evening.
In the early hours of the morning though - before work, our community is back, and by 7am we normally have more than 300 people walking or running! As we approach 8am, the excitement builds, as we try our best to reach our school and personal goals of kilometres ran. What a fabulous way to start the day!!
